SEX=LOVE     LOVE=VALUE     VALUE=POWER     POWER=LIFE     LIFE=SEX

By employing abstract or iconic figurative images, I investigate the mystery behind sexuality, my public personas, and my feelings of value and power as a woman.

As an interdisciplinary artist I construct large-scale sculptural oil paintings, drawings, and digital/video images, which reflect the ways in which I reveal and conceal different parts of myself.  My choice of process and materials is a highly sensual decision that is full of visceral energy.  Every part of my work is lovingly and patiently made.  Whether it is through a digitally shot and edited video, or a painting on restoration linen, prepped with handmade gesso (rabbit skin glue and crushed marble), distressed, and painted with handmade oil paints; I connect to the complexities of womanhood.  The first technique enables me to explore new possibilities and vulnerabilities through technology, while with the other I can rely on a time-honored process, which is a symbol of security.  At the same time, I’m taking on the history of oil painting, which is traditionally a man’s world, and I claim it for my own.

Tears of grief and joy, passion and repulsion, and the power of creativity and new life, pulse through the work. The paintings and videos are at once sensual, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical.  My art asks whether our value can be in mind and body, in strength and softness, in beauty and imperfections.  My journey lies in pursuing these fundamental and ever-changing questions.
